BELLS BEACH, Australia (Thursday, Apr. 12, 2007) – With just one day in the event waiting period to spare, Rip Curl Pro presented by Snickers officials have sent the remaining 16 surfers in contention to 'ring the Bell' out at Bells Beach today.
The Foster's ASP World Tour surfers still competing paddled out into the four foot (1.2 metre) waves at 7am this morning.
Fifteen heats of competition remain and the action commenced with Round 4 this morning. Four of the 16 surfers still surfing have rung the Bell before (Kelly Slater (USA), Andy Irons (HAW), Mick Fanning (AUS), Joel Parkinson (AUS)), two are rookies (Royden Bryson (ZAF) and Ben Dunn (AUS)) and two are back on tour after brief hiatuses (Mick Campbell (AUS) and Leonardo Neves (BRA)).
In addition to former Rip Curl Pro winners, perennially top-performing surfers Taj Burrow (AUS), Damien Hobgood (HAW), Bede Durbidge (AUS), Bruce Irons (HAW) and Fred Pattachia (HAW) are looking for big results.
