INAUGURAL HAVAIANAS BEACHLEY CLASSIC TO COMMENCE SHORTLY

COOLANGATTA, Australia (Monday, October 9, 2006) – The inaugural Havaianas Beachley Classic will initiate main event action in Manly, Australia at 10:45am today.

One metre (three foot) swell is producing punchy little peaks for the world's best women surfers to unleash on.

The Beachley Trials were run and won by Stephanie Gilmore (AUS) earlier today. Gilmore, who earned international acclaim when she won the first ASP Women's World Tour event of 2005 as a wildcard on the Gold Coast of Australia, will now meet world No. 1 Melanie Redman-Carr (AUS) and Keala Kennelly (HAW) in heat three of round one.

Running from Oct. 9-15, the third to last event on the ASP Women's World Tour calendar has a huge bearing on the world's best women surfers' world title and requalification hopes.

The richest women's surf event in ASP history, the winner of the Havaianas Beachley Classic will walk away US$20,000 richer.
